FAQ

You can really eat the charms?!

Unfortunately (fortunately?) all of the charms only *look* like food. However, "Edible Jewelry" would be a wonderful business (probably lots of repeat customers) if someone else would like to get it off the ground!

Where do you get all these charms?

All of the charms here are individually hand-sculpted by us. We do not purchase any of the charms from other sources.

What are the charms made out of?

The charms are sculpted out of polymer clay, which is a bakeable clay that comes in a variety of colors and can be "fired" in a kitchen oven. More information about polymer clays can be found on the wikipedia entry.

How do you make them?

We hand-sculpt all of the charms. We do not use any molds. Our primary tool is just our hands, but we occasionally use small brushes, razor blades, and other tools similar to those used in dentistry to achieve finer effects. The color is generally integral to the clay, but we occasionally will use various pigments and paints to create effects such as browning on the baked goods. All of the charms are glazed with a water-based varnish to seal them against wear and tear and bring out the full depth of their colors.

How did you get started doing this?

We've been making the miniature foods since we were kids. Our dolls were very well-fed. At some point, we decided that miniature foods would look better on earrings and necklaces than on Barbie's dinner table! After many years of giving our work away as gifts, we decided that the rest of the world needed fun food jewelry, and Inedible Jewelry was born.

Are the charms sturdy?

We have been wearing some versions of these charms for nearly a decade! They are quite sturdy for everyday wear. Nonetheless, they should be treated with the same care as all fine jewelry to best preserve them.
If you do find that you have any problems with your charms, please let us know! Not only do we want to ensure that you're happy with them, but we are constantly striving to improve our quality.

Do you make anything for small children?

Although we think some of these charms would be adorable on kids, we don't recommend them for children under the age of about twelve.

Do you ever make ________ charms?

We love custom requests! We have made all sorts of custom food charms for customers. Email us and ask. We'll let you know if we think your request would be feasible. Chances are, if it's a food item, we can probably figure out how to make it. (Although lobsters are a bit trickier!)  At this time, we're focusing on just the food charms, but we do know lots of talented artists who make all sorts of other things, and would be happy to pass along recommendations
